User testing methods: discovery or evaluation
Our primary method is the think-aloud one on one Discovery interview. This form of testing takes 30 to 45 minutes on average. Sample sizes vary but are typically between 10 and 30 people in total. We test with your designated target market.
We also do evaluative or quantitative user testing with large samples. The quantitative tests are descriptive, compared with discovery testing which is more diagnostic
- Testing should always be conducted as an individual interview and never in group discussions.
- Participants should be members of the intended audience who have not been involved in the design or writing of the document and do not work for your organisation.
- If the sample for the testing is the general public, it should include men and women, younger and older people, people with lower and higher levels of education. Include people in vulnerable situations whenever you can.
