Training for an internal client team (toys)
Co-creation focus groups:
Our client maunfactures toys.
To get design ideas and feedback on what toys to create, our client liked to conduct co-creation interviews and focus groups with children and their parents.
This was an ongoing year-round activity for them, so it was important that these interviews and groups were conducted by the internal team. It was aslo invaluable for the toy designers to see and hear first hand how the kids interacted with their toys.
But interviews and focus groups with kids are hard! It was hard for non-researchers to know:
- What are the best type of questions to ask?
- How should you ask them?
- How long should the interviews be?
- how do you manage group dynamics, or disruptive or silent children?
- And more!
What we did
Susan Bell trained the designers how to run focus groups and interviews. We did this by inviting kids (with all the approporiate parental controls) to a research session. Susan moderated focus groups and interviews – with the team observing, followed by a feedback session. After this, we ran a formal training session where team members could practice. At the end, the team was given a hand-out of tips and tricks.
We have trained many internal teams to help them do their own research – this has included a government organisation, a publishing business, and a religious institution.
